Homelessness keeps getting worse all across America. Even before COVID-19, the number of people without homes was rising year after year. Thousands of people sleep outside, in shelters, or move from place to place each night. COVID made it even harder for them.
But there is a solution to this problem. All it takes is a little kindness, some teamwork, and people stepping up to help.
Change How You Think About Homeless People
Lots of people say homeless people made bad choices or have problems with drugs. But that’s not usually the whole story. Many become homeless because medical bills get too big. Others lost jobs they couldn’t replace. For some women and kids, leaving homes where someone hurt them is why they’re on the streets now.
Next time you see someone without a home, stop and think. They had dreams, too. Maybe they used to live just like you. If your friends say homeless people “just don’t want jobs,” tell them that’s not true. Most people without homes want a normal life, but run into problems bigger than they know.

Help Your Community by Giving or Volunteering
Food banks always need more food. Shelters run out of basic items all the time. Do you have extra cans of soup or beans? Bring them to your local pantry. Cleaning your room? Those clothes could really help someone.
Socks are something shelters never have enough of. The same goes for soap, toothbrushes, and even masks. Food banks also need helpers to organize things or perhaps even serve meals or fill out forms.
Libraries often help homeless people, too. They offer computers, bathrooms, and a safe place to sit during bad weather. Maybe visit your library and ask if they could use extra help or donations.
Give Directly and Let People Decide for Themselves
When you give someone money, it lets them decide what they need most. You might spend five dollars without thinking, but that five dollars can mean eating today for someone else.
If handing cash isn’t your thing, that’s okay. You can buy them a sandwich or a small gift card instead. Pack some snacks, water, and soap into a little bag to keep in your car.
Remember, homeless people have almost no control over anything. And so giving them a choice can really help to give back some power. Even a small choice is good enough. Small kindnesses really count.
Speak Up for Real Change and Better Housing
To really help, we need some better ways of dealing with homelessness. Getting someone a place to live should always come first. Because trying to find a job or get healthy is really hard if you don’t know where you’re sleeping tonight.
You can also call your local leaders and ask them to support affordable housing options. Also, try to go to community meetings and speak up for new housing projects. Good public transportation can also help people get jobs and services.
Places that offer housing along with help like doctors, job training, and counseling can be highly effective. And they cost communities way less than emergency rooms or jail stays. These programs can also stop people from becoming homeless repeatedly.
Help Homeless People Find Jobs and Benefits
Having money changes everything. Many homeless people qualify for government benefits but don’t know how to get them. Local groups always need volunteers to help people complete complex forms.
Support companies that hire people moving out of homelessness. Shelters sometimes run job programs that need donated work clothes or mentors. Even a small job can give someone a sense of pride and purpose.
Treat Everyone Like They Matter
One of the easiest ways to help is just to be friendly. You can look people in the eye and say hello or ask for their name. These small things really help people feel less alone. And they leave an impact.
Just a smile or quick chat can tell someone, “Hey, you matter.” And that costs nothing at all. Making homeless people feel seen is where changing things really starts.
